A Great Town Deserves Great Journalism

On March 5th 1993 the Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson was banned from athletics for life after failing a mandatory drugs test.

Twenty years later to the very day, Cleveleys News, the premier news service for the town of Thornton Cleveleys was launched. Few would disagree that of the two events, this was better.

Thornton-Cleveleys is widely regarded as the greatest place in England. In fact statistics show that Cleveleys residents never or rarely leave the town. True, the vast majority of them are infirm and bed-ridden, but we are convinced that even if they could get up and walk away, they wouldn't. In one recent survey we asked 100 locals how much they loved Cleveleys. Of these, 99 categorically stated that they either loved it more than life itself, or that they did not understand the question. The remaining 1 sadly passed away before we could get to him.

Such a great town deserves a great news service, and that is what we at Cleveleys News aim to provide. We are not part of the global media consortium that feeds the world's population with half-truths and sensationalism. We are an independent, non-profit organisation run by a perfectly average cross-section of pensioners, war veterans, retired schoolmasters and care-in-the-community recipients. That means we represent YOU.

When Cleveleys Market traders were suddenly and unexpectedly forced out of their premises with only 21 months notice in the form of internet articles and planning permission notices right outside the door, we were first to break the news – a whole 24 hours ahead of the BBC. We were the only news service to report on the discovery of hidden pirate catacombs beneath KFC. And only Cleveleys News updates the community on the daily special guest flavours at Cleveleys Ice-Cream parlour – something which even the parlour itself is hesitant to advertise (the guest flavours are rarely displayed on the counter, you must ask for them).

One of the key principles of journalism is to make news significant, interesting and relevant - therefore all good journalism should be entertaining. Follow Cleveleys News on Twitter and we guarantee we will never disappoint.

Much love,

The Cleveleys News Team
